Episode's summary
Héctor Flores’ life changed forever when he learned that his son, Dani, had disappeared. Dani was one of over 8,000 people to go missing in his hometown of Guadalajara, and one of 130,000 around Mexico, where that word, “disappeared,” has become part of everyday life. In Guadalajara, most of those cases are blamed on the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which uses disappearances as a tool to exert social control, intimidate the population, punish people, and even recruit new members. But for Héctor, that explanation did not fit his son’s story. As he began gathering clues on his own, he started to suspect that the reality could be more complex and more disturbing: that the very authorities who were supposed to protect his son and search for him may have been behind his disappearance. We visited Héctor at his bunker-like home, where he has installed cameras, locks, and reinforced walls after years of intense harassment linked to his search for his son. From there, we retraced Héctor and Dani’s story and…

EP04 - Gio and Fito: When Gangsta Rap Gets Real | English
ListenedJorge Mora Villamar, known to his fans as Gio, was a rapper, music producer, and DJ. His talent lifted him out of poverty and off the streets of Guayaquil. But it also led him into the inner circle of Ecuador’s most notorious crime boss—and gave him a front-row seat to the criminal violence that has reshaped the country. When we met Gio in 2024, he explained the inner workings of the Choneros mafia and how they combined gang warfare on the streets with a “digital war” waged through their own stable of musicians. He also described the mafia maneuvers, alliances, and betrayals that had tipped Ecuador over into a period of relentless and brutal violence, which continues today. What Gio told us helped us analyze the structure of Ecuadorian organized crime and explain how a country once known as one of the most peaceful in South America could become one of the most violent places in the world. Gio also shared his own story, his journey from drug user to rapper to criminal commander. And he told us about his close…
EP03 Three Ways to Lose a Son | English
ListenedBuenaventura is Colombia’s main Pacific port and one of the continent’s most strategic corridors for cocaine trafficking. For decades, this position has made the city a battleground between guerrilla groups, paramilitaries, and criminal gangs fighting for control of drug routes toward Europe and North America. The result is a city where men and women are killed, children disappear, and families learn to live with uncertainty as a permanent companion. In this episode, we travel to Buenaventura and meet Elena, an Afro-Colombian woman in her sixties who arrived in the city as a child after armed groups killed her parents in her hometown. Buenaventura took her in, and she made it her own. She had seven children and built a life. But the war that brought her there never left. Three of her children have disappeared. Each one, in a different way. The first was Luis, who one day simply vanished. The second was Esteban, whose whereabouts Elena still does not know after years of searching. The third was Josué, her…
